At Illumination Counseling Services, we recognize that self-esteem plays a crucial role in mental health, resilience and general well-being. Low self-esteem can erode our quality of life, negatively impacting our relationship with ourselves, others, and our environment, acting as a barrier to wellness. Nicole Gross, LPC, and Jackie Covatta, LPC, are dedicated professionals, passionate about helping individuals understand and resolve self-esteem issues. Jackie and Nicole work collaboratively developing individualized plans within a trauma-informed, gender affirming, culturally sensitive, strength-based process providing compassion-focused and evidence-based treatments, holding your experiences as sacred in the process of helping you overcome what’s in the way.
Self-esteem is a crucial component to our overall mental health (MH) and plays a significant role in our well-being. Additionally, our self-esteem can be compromised by other mental health challenges, such as depression or anxiety. Low self-esteem undermines our relationships, including the relationship with ourselves, others, and our environment.
Signs of Low Self-Esteem
Common signs of low self-esteem you may experience include persistent feelings of inadequacy, self-doubt, or worthlessness, and negative self-talk such as criticizing yourself or focusing on perceived flaws. These behaviors/habits create a distorted/poor self-image and can lead to limited experiences with avoidant behaviors, such as avoiding challenges for fear of failing, rejection, or pursuing new opportunities. Low self-esteem impacts your ability to internalize positive feedback, because it affects your ability to take compliments/dismissing praise or acknowledgment from others. This leads to feeling unworthy of love and support. Further, comparing yourself to others can also be a significant issue, leading to feelings of inferiority. Low self-esteem can result in difficulties forming and maintaining healthy relationships, as clients may fear intimacy or feel undeserving of connection. Recognizing these signs is an important step toward resolving self-esteem issues and fostering a healthier self-image.
How Therapeutic Counseling Can Help
Therapeutic counseling can be a powerful tool in healing low self-esteem. Nicole and Jackie support individuals within a safe space where clients can explore their feelings and experiences as to how their self-esteem is affecting them and develop effective strategies for healing. We provide integrative therapies incorporating strategies from several modalities, such as Mindfulness, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and EMDR, empowering a more balanced self-view, integrating opportunities for personal growth and self-discovery, and lifting up strengths, values, and accomplishments as adaptive ways to foster a greater sense of self-worth and empowerment.
