EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a highly effective therapy that helps individuals process painful memories and regain a sense of peace and control.

What Is EMDR?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a complete psychotherapy integrating: Mindfulness, Psychodynamic, Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Somatic Focused, Emotion Focused therapies (EFT) which is a powerful tool to help people heal from symptoms and emotional distress from disturbing life experiences.

EMDR is a structured therapy designed to help people process and resolve traumatic memories that may be contributing to PTSD, anxiety, or other emotional challenges. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR is an 8-phase process with guided eye movements/ bilateral stimulation to help the brain desensitize to disturbing experiences and reprocess distressing memories to resolve the disturbances and associated symptoms and the emotional intensity of the memories, allowing individuals to move forward without being triggered/overwhelmed by past experiences.

EMDR is effective. It’s often used to address trauma, but it can also help with anxiety, phobias, and many other mental health concerns. We work closely with individuals to tailor EMDR sessions to your unique needs, ensuring a safe and supportive environment conducive to optimal healing.

How EMDR Helps with Trauma and PTSD

Repeated studies prove EMDR to be a therapy people can experience benefits of psychotherapy that once took years to make a difference. It is widely assumed that severe emotional pain requires a long time to heal. EMDR therapy shows that the mind can in fact heal from psychological trauma much as the body recovers from physical trauma. When you cut your hand, your body works to close the wound. If a foreign object or repeated injury irritates the wound, it festers and causes pain. Once the block is removed, healing resumes.

Much like the physical healing process as described above, EMDR therapy demonstrates a similar sequence of events occurs with mental processes. The brain’s information processing system naturally moves toward mental health. If the system is blocked or imbalanced by the impact of a disturbing event, the emotional wound festers and can cause intense suffering. Once the block is removed, healing resumes.

Using practices and procedures in EMDR therapy, our counselors can help you activate your natural healing processes.

Trauma can leave a lasting impact, causing intrusive thoughts, flashbacks, or heightened anxiety. EMDR works by targeting the root of these symptoms, unprocessed traumatic memories. By reprocessing these memories, EMDR helps reduce their emotional charge and allows individuals to view them in a less distressing way.

For individuals with PTSD, EMDR can be life-changing. It helps break the cycle of reliving traumatic events and symptoms and provides tools to manage triggers more effectively. Treating many individuals with all different traumatic experiences, we’ve seen how EMDR empowers clients to reclaim their lives and build more positive relationships.
